My 2016 Reading List

Here is my "list" ...

I am sure it will change throughout the year.

I won't make it through all of these.

I'll add to them.

But these are what I'm starting with.

What's on your reading list this year?

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

I'll start by telling you that I loved this book.

LOVED it.

And I haven't even finished it.

I am not an aspiring writer.  I do want to write a book or two in my lifetime, but I don't want to be 'a writer'.  In my current job, I have opportunity to write for a community magazine four times a year.  I enjoy that but I wouldn't want to do it full time ... as a job.

I'm not interested, really, in writing fiction.  Although, after reading this book, I reckon I could give it a good crack.  I feel armed to take on the writing world ... even though it is not really what I want to do.  That is how good this book is!

Like I said, I haven't actually finished the book.  I started it a while ago and then life got busy and I gave my time to other things like my kids' and husband's birthdays, end of year events at school, Christmas, school holidays (summer vacation), and who knows what else!?  I have a little sunburn that tells me some of my time was given to the beach!  I hate sunburns and I fully lathered up with 50+ sunscreen but I missed a couple of bits and they aren't happy with me!

But back to the book not being finished!  I picked it up again the other day and have been reading away, totally loving it.  But today I got a notice from my library saying they assume I've lost the book and would I please return it or pay $51.62.  Oops!  I prefer to not pay for library books so I returned it!  I've re-reserved it though so I will finish it when it's my turn to take the book home again!

SK talks a lot about his life and his journey to becoming an author in the first half of this book. He shares some great wisdom that he has gained along the way.  I love this ... 'put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn't in the middle of the room.  Life isn't a support-system for art.  It's the other way around."

And ... "If you want to be a writer, you must do two thing above all others; read a lot and write a lot.  There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut."  It's really true, isn't it?  My art teacher tells us all the time that the best artists are the ones who do art ALL THE TIME.  It's probably true across the board ... the more you DO __________ fill in the blank, the better you become at it.

SK encourages aspiring writers to set a goal of writing 1000 words a day.  Just sit and write.  Now, like I said, I'm not an aspiring writer, but I do want to write a book this year.  And so, in Feb, once the kids have gone back to school and I'm back into a routine, I'm going to start by setting myself the goal of writing 500 words a day.  I have no idea how long that will take me!  I guess I'll find out!

SK says that what each of us knows makes us unique!  I agree.  I have a story to tell ... it's not fiction.  It's the story of 2015  ... my year of 'the uncomfortable'.  I'm not sure if anyone else (besides my husband, my best friend, and a handful of other people) will ever read it, but I'm going to write it!

I've also got a line up of books that I'm going to read in 2016.  I'll share that with you in another blog post soon!  Do you have a reading list?   Shoot me a link in the comments, I'd love to come check it out!  Or you can find me on goodreads ... I love finding new book recommendations on there!

Whistling Past The Graveyard

 photo 25D59EF8-2007-4514-A851-0FD2D8C657DC_zpszhexaazm.jpg

Whistling Past The Graveyard by Susan Crandall

I have been meaning to sit and write a review for ages but got too busy painting and opening my etsy shop!!!  (more on that in a later post) I kept looking at the book sitting on my desk, needing to go back to the library.  I thought a few times ... I won't write a review ... I'll just take it back.
But I just couldn't.  I just had to write a review! I just had to let you know that
you need to read this book!!  Seriously.

It was a fun, easy read.
I enjoyed every minute of it.

It's written in the voice of a nine-year-old white girl in the early 60's who runs away from the home where she lives with her overly strict grandmother and a father who adores her but works out
of town most of the time.  She sets off to find her mother.  Along the way she has
adventure after adventure.  Some very dangerous and terrifying.

Trying to make her was from Mississippi to Nashville ... on foot ... she accepts a  ride
from a black woman travelling with a white baby.  This decision will
change her life forever.

I loved how the author captured the innocence of a child.
The unquestioning devotion of a child to a parent.
The inner workings of the mind of a child.
I just loved it.  All of it.  I wish I
read books twice.  This
one, I probably
would.

Thursday's Books { 11 }

 photo DSC_0005-1_zpsebff63db.jpg

I'm excited about my pile of books this week!
I've already started "The Storyteller" and thought I'm only a chapter in, I'm enjoying it.

I would love to see your pile of books !  Just take a photo of your library books ... post it somewhere ... anywhere (!) ... facebook, instagram (#thursdaysbooks), flickr, photobucket ... your blog ... and then come leave me a comment so I can come see.

So, tell me ... what are you reading ?  And have you visited your library lately ?

Thursday's Books { 8 }

Photobucket

 I just grabbed a couple off the shelf this week and picked up my reserve ... another Diane Chamberlain.

Last week's books ... I read the cookbook called Cut Out The Crap.  I didn't like it AT ALL.  That's a bummer, because I love cookbooks.  I love books that are about fresh, healthy food.  But this one just didn't do it for me.  I didn't like the photos ... they didn't make the food look like something I'd want to eat.  I didn't like the sound of the recipes.  And there were things that bugged me ... like a suggestion to put chicken in a recipe that was in the vegetarian section !?!

I've started the novel "The Light Between Oceans" but it's slow going.  Not because it's not a good book, I think it's going to be a great book, but because of two reasons.  1.  It's not a Diane Chamberlain book and I'm so into her style of writing at the moment becuase I have been reading so many of her books.  So ... it's adjusting to a new style ... a new 'voice'.  And 2.  Life has been really really busy ... and I've had less time to sit and read.  And even at bedtime, when I do most of my reading, I've just been going to sleep !  Here's hoping this week finds me with my nose in my book a bit more !

Thursday's Books { 7 }

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

I only grabbed three books this week.

I've already started reading the top one that was recommended
to me some time ago.  I've just been waiting for it to
come in from the library.  I was like the
30th person to reserve it !!

Thursday's Books { 6 }

I wasn't able to go to the Library yesterday because we were out of town. Total bummer, but I still have PLENTY to read ! I finally found some hours on the weekend to sit and read some of the cookbooks that I've checked out over my last two visits.

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

Sunday afternoon, I just sat on the beanbag, surround by cookbooks.  Rory was watching football in the same room so we were sort of just reading, watching and chatting.  It was a nice afternoon.

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

Monday was a public holiday here so I didn't have to go to work.  I spent close to TWO hours looking at cookbooks and reading my novel ... in the BATH TUB !  (my favorite place to read !)

Anyway ... I've got some cookbooks to tell you about ... You ready ?  Here we go ....

Annie's Garden to Table
... This book makes me long for a big piece of land to be able to grow all of our own fruits and vegetables !!  It is a 'garden diary" featuring recipes ... I didn't like the diary part, but maybe if I'd read that it was that first, I wouldn't have picked the book up.  I felt like it was too much 'talking' and sort of like reading a blog rather than a book.   Lots of the recipes felt complicated but may not necessarily be, it's just the overall feeling I had.  But I've written down five of them that sound interesting ... like, Leek Custard.  Asparagus with a boiled egg and herbed crumbs.  Snapper with lemon and capers.  Garlic prawns with garlic soup.  YUM !!  and Kasoundi.

The Homesick Texan is a COOL book.  I loved it.  BUT it has lots of ingredients that I can't get here in Australia and they do a lot of canning, which I'm not set up for.  YET.  I am going to try making Chipotle Ketchup, Breakfast sausage and Biscuits and gravy !

The Veggie Patch Cookbook through the year makes me wish I could GROW EVERYTHING !  It is filled with lots of little goodies, including when to pick, tips on how to eat, store, preserve and freeze your harvest.    I wrote down 13 recipes that I want to try.  One that I've put a big star beside is called Chicken roasted with fennel and lemon.  Sounds so good ..... Lemongrass and chilli salsa !? Yes please.  Coriander and walnut pesto.  The list goes on !

Your Place or Mine ? I so wanted to love this cookbook !  It's written by George and Gary off of Masterchef.  I love them on the show !  But I didn't love this book.  I did love the text and how it was presented.  The photos were great but in the big giant cookbook, there were four recipes that I want to try.  The Fennel Mornay sounds so interesting.  Beetroot and feta dip.  YUM ! Asparagus baked in salt crust ... I'm all over this salt crust thing.  And an Asparagus with goat's curd and green olive tapenade ... intriguing !

Jamie's America ... oh how I love Jamie !  I love the variety in this book.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the photos.  I love the personal touches and stories he shares of the people he meets along the way.  13 recipes on my list ... the first one I will try is Stuffed Courgette (Zucchini) Flowers ... I'll try it as soon as I have enough Zucchini Flowers on my plant ... I noticed the first one yesterday !!

Pure Vegetarian.  I have a little pet peeve with cookbooks.  It bugs me when every recipe doesn't have a picture.  This book didn't have near enough photos.  Usually I won't even persist if there aren't photos but I did with this one for some reason. 10 recipes that I want to try .... all sound AMAZING !

The Farmer's Market Family Cookbook ... Really cool layout.  The chapters were Veg, Fruit, Meat/Poultry/Seafood, Dairy, Nuts/Spices.  It's all about using food you can find at the farmers or growers markets ... or even growing your own.  Sweet potato ravioli is among the five recipes I'd like to try !

Movida Cocina is not a cookbook I would have picket up if I hadn't been to the restaurant.  But, it's a lovely cookbook.  The recipes are COMPLICATED but I'm going to try some of them because I've eaten the food and it is UNREAL !  So delicious !  Also ... I love the photos ... and the fact that this book is filled with SPANISH FOOD !!

Donna Hay - A Cook's Guide ... Her cookbooks are always beautiful.  Lots of big, bright photos.  I love to look through them.  Also, her recipes are often simple which is great.  This book is a great one for beginner cooks.  It walks you through a lot of techniques and teaches you  how to do very basic recipes from scratch.  Probably a good one to give a young couple just starting out.   I'm going to teach myself how to make Choux Pastry using this book ... and then I'm going to make that Choux Pastry into the Chocolate Eclairs just a few pages over !

Real Food Cookbook  GREAT BOOK !!  Lots of good, healthy, fresh sounding recipes.  My only complaint ... the photos, though they are nice, there isn't one to represent every recipe ... I think it needs more photos !  But ... even without the photos, I'm going to try 12 of the recipes !

No excuses.  Again, needs more photos.  I like to see what the recipe looks like --> ALWAYS ! I wasn't overly excited with this recipe but there are a few low cal recipes that look nice and so I will try them ...

Modern Asian
... BEAUTIFUL book !  And there are photos with every recipe.  And I want to eat EVERYTHING in this book !  Not even kidding.  If I was going to buy one cookbook out of this list, it would be this one.  Can't wait to try out some of the recipes ....

And that's as far as I got.  I still have a stack as high as the one I just went through to read still !  But since I didn't get any new books this week, maybe I will have time again over the weekend to get through the rest of them !!  :)

Thursday's Books { 5 }

We totally maxed out all of our cards today.  With the books we already had, and the ones we got today, we had to use Rory's card to get them all checked out !  But seriously, I'll never complain if my kids continually 'max out' their library cards !

I've taken three photos to share with you this week.  Usually I don't do the kids stacks as well but I decided to this time.  Not sure if I always will ... maybe.

As for last week's books ... I am working on one of the novels (A Beautiful Lie) and am enjoying it.  There was a huge stack of cookbooks too ... I haven't had time to sit and read through them yet.  We had a full on weekend with travel AND guests and well, the weekdays are pretty packed.  It's school holidays as well so I've got the kids home.  Throw in taking a crew to the movies followed by a sleep over for my daughter who is turning nine this coming weekend and well ... you get the drift.  As you can see, I've got more cookbooks this week and I plan to sit for a considerable time on the weekend and read them ... here's hoping that happens ... I'll let you know which ones are my favorites next week.

I'm super excited that my friend Khrista posted her first Thursday's Books to her blog last week.  Go check it out !  Even if you aren't super excited about books ... go check out her blog, it's great, one of my favorites !

Seriously, how can anyone not LOVE the library ?  Just look at all those beautiful cookbooks !!  To buy all of those would cost a fortune, and reading them on an e-reader just wouldn't be the same !!  Sometimes, you just need a real book ... with beautiful pictures covering the pages that you turn one by one !!  Can't wait to get stuck into this pile of books !!  I'm working my way through last weeks books too ... Reviews coming soon !

Thursday's Books { 3 }

Photobucket

So ... this weeks stack of books has caused a little dilemma for me !  I started reading "Born Under A Million Shadows" last week but it's a little slow going.  It's not that I'm not interested in the story but I don't find myself wishing I could get back to my book ... You know what I mean ?  My dilemma is this ... I reserved a whole stack of Diane Chamberlain books because I LOVED her book "The Midwife's Confession" (you can read my review if you like) and I think I'm going to really like those books.  I want to give the other book a fair go though because Rory recommended it to me ...

What to do ?  What to do ?

I'm super excited about the stack of cookbooks at the bottom of the pile !  But really ... I'm always excited about a stack of cookbooks !

Last weeks books:
I've already mentioned my dilemma with the first book.

And I only checked out two ...

The Flexitarian Table ... I've had a couple of looks through it.  My initial thoughts are that there are a few dishes that I would like to try but they look complicated.  I don't mind complicated, when I have time ...

**

I was super excited that a couple of people joined in last week !  One on facebook and a couple on instagram !

I would love to see your pile of books !  Just take a photo of your library books ... post it somewhere ... anywhere (!) ... facebook, instagram, flickr, photobucket ... your blog ... and then come leave me a comment so I can come see.

Thursday's Books { 2 }

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

I only got two books this week. I was in a super big hurry and so just returned some and grabbed these two reserves that had come in.  My husband, Rory recommended the top one {Born Under A Million Shadows} to me.  He just finished listening to it. He commutes and so most of his books are 'read' in audio form now ...

I had just finished the book I was reading not 30 minutes before going to the library and was glad for a new one that I knew would be good.  {Does anyone else hate finishing a good book and then starting another one that isn't as good ?}

I'm excited about looking through The Flexitarian Table.  Do you know what a flexitarian is ?  1. A person who is mainly a vegetarian but who occasionally eats fish or meat.  2. Someone who is not a vegetarian but enjoys meatless meals.

I am a flexitarian ! I love meatless meals ... but I'm not a vegetarian.

Last weeks books: I haven't read the novels yet.  I have finished one that I had checked out the previous week and I'll review that here soon.  You'll want to read it ... it was great.

The three cookbooks:

The Lygon St book: I've checked this one out before and was not overly impressed with it.  I thought that I'd give it another go since I've now eaten on Lygon St !  But ... still couldn't get into it.  If you are a history buff, you will probably love it.  I am about as far from a history buff as you can get ...

The Movida Cocina book ... LOVED IT.  Would love to own in, but realistically, there are probably only a few recipes we will try and so will probably just try them and then be content to check it out from the library again if I ever want to try something different.

Michelle Obamas book ... didn't like it.  Too much boring stuff.  I would have liked it to be much simpler, with more pictures and 'how to's'.  Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance but I guess that's it with this sort of book, if it doesn't catch my interest straight away, I move on to something that does.

That's it for Thursday's Books this week.  Would love to see your pile of books !  Just take a photo of your library books ... post it somewhere ... anywhere (!) ... facebook, instagram, flickr, photobucket ... your blog ... and then come leave me a comment so I can come see.

So, tell me ... what are you reading ?  And have you visited your library lately ?

Thursday's Books { 1 }

Photobucket

I went into the library this week. I go once a week. Every week.  I love the library.  I feel it is a great resource that not near enough people make use of.  As I was chatting to the librarian, she asked me why my borrowing numbers have decreased recently.  You see, they used to tease me because I'd go in and have a box of reserved books waiting for me to pick up.  The truth, and I told her this, is just lack of time recently.  Not that I'm not borrowing, or reading.  I'm reading more than ever and today I borrowed five books.  I still have a stash on my shelf too from last week.  And plenty on my reserve list too that like a million other people are waiting for so it's taking some time to get them.

She said they were having a discussion this morning about how much the borrowing from the library had decreased recently and said that she thinks that eventually libraries will become obsolete and no longer exist.  That made me so sad.

I decided then and there to do my bit to save the library ...

And this is the first thought I had.  Every Thursday I'm going to show you what books I got from the library.  I may or may not review them later on after I've read them ...

I would love it if many of you would join with me.  Especially if you are a library lover !!  Just take a photo of your library books ... post it somewhere ... anywhere (!) ... facebook, instagram, flickr, photobucket ... your blog ... and then come leave me a comment so I can come see.

I love photos of library books !  I'm not even kidding !  My friend Khrista posts photos of her library book stacks on her instagram and I always take a photo of it on my phone (because stinkin' instagram doesn't let you zoom in) and then zoom in for a closer look !  I then head over to my goodreads page and add books from her pile that interest me !!

I'm excited about this weeks book.  The bottom two are cookbooks from Melbourne Restaurants that we ate at just a week ago!  I can't wait to look through them.  Michelle Obama's book about her garden and garden's across America is one I stumbled upon and am excited to peruse.   The top two caught my eye on the shelf today ....

And there you have it ...

So, tell me ... what are you reading ?  And have you visited your library lately ?

Books Books Books !!

I got a pile of books from the library today ! I'm so excited ! I reserved a bunch a week or two ago and a few of them had come in, plus I found a few on the shelf that looked good.

One of my goals for 2012 is to make time to read. Well ... I read all the time, but mostly online these days. I miss books. Actual books with pages that turn ! So ... I'm going to make the time to read books ...

Hence the reserving from the library !

I'm starting one tonight. It's called Mice.

I plan to write some book reviews too so keep your eyes open for that.

Ok ... I'm off.

To bed.

To read !!

day 115 {biblioteca} 365 & WFMW

we are frequent borrowers at our local library, the librarian teases us about it ...
if there were frequent flyer miles for library books checked out, we'd be world travelers !
we like to get on our computer at home, reserve books and then once a week we pick them up
from the library van that parks not far from the kids school ... it's wonderfully convenient !!

because we have so many borrowed books, we needed a dedicated shelf for them
this one in our living room is perfect

the bottom shelf is home to all of our library books
here's what it looks like after today's visit

i hang a bag off the side of the shelf
this is where books go when we're finished, ready to be taken back

here's alia's section of the shelf
she loves that she can read now ... and she does lots of it

and jono's
he is a voracious reader

rory's books are all audio these days
perfect for his hour long (each way!) commute to work

and mine ...
mostly cookbooks, a bit of photography and creativity
true stories and a bit of jodi picoult

and with that ... i'm off to read

**

It's been a while since I've posted a Works For Me Wednesday but I thought this might be a helpful little hint for some. I know I used to be frustrated with lost library books ... not anymore ! The books have a home, and I know where they are ! AND ... when the kids (or we) finish a book, it goes into the return bag ... easy ... I just grab the full bag on a Wednesday morning, throw it in the back of the car, all ready for that afternoon's trip to the library.

Check out other things that WORK for other people ... you might find something helpful !
